Environmental Studies
Door County is unparalleled in its beauty. Roughed coastlines, soaring bluffs, lush forests, and an assortment of native flowers provide a limitless variety of activities emphasizing the peninsula’s unique environment. A visit to a wildlife sanctuary includes educational programming and nature walks. From the county’s most precious gem, the Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly to the delicacy of the Showy Lady’s Slipper wildflower, Door County is a wealth of environmental experiences.
The Clearing
The Clearing is a "folk school" for adults in Door County, Wisconsin. We are celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2010 and our founder, Jens Jensen's, 150th birthday. Jen Jensen was a renowned landscape architect and conservationist and established The Clearing in 1935. The Clearing is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The Clearing is located in Ellison Bay, near the tip of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula. The property—94% of it is in a conservation easement, ensuring that it will remain undeveloped in perpetuity. Our shorline on Lake Michigan's Green Bay provides a fundamental look at the Niagara Escarpment formation.
The Clearing's physical assets—128 acres of forest and meadow, a long expanse of secluded shoreline, beautiful views of the water and the setting sun, and historic stone and log buildings—combine to create one of Door County's great natural and cultural treasures. The Clearing provides diverse educational experiences in the folk school tradition, in a setting of quiet forests, meadows and water. The Clearing is a place where adults who share an interest in nature, arts or humanities can learn, reflect and wonder.
