Visual Arts

The beauty of Door County, its people and landscape, provides an environment that inspires the visual artist to create.  Sculptors, painters, potters, weavers, craftsmen in every medium of the visual arts, cross the threshold of the Door to participate in the spirit of this unique community.  From Washington Island to the county’s southern-most border, museums, galleries, studios, and schools provide an unparalleled experience for the peninsula’s visitors, residents, and artists.  Experience the brilliant colors of Door County…from a painter’s palette to a potter’s glaze…

Door Community Auditorium

The Mission of the Link Gallery, a unique exhibition space that connects the Door Community Auditorium to the adjacent Gibraltar Area Schools, is to “provide a space for exhibits that explore ideas in the humanities, the creative arts, history, the sciences, the world around us, and the world beyond.”  Year ‘round, the Link Gallery features the creative endeavors of members of the community by promoting learning and understanding.  Always thoughtful and engaging, the Link Gallery exhibits are universally exciting, diverse, thought-provoking, and entertaining.  Annually, the Link Gallery hosts The Women Artists of Door County and The Door County Art League, providing an opportunity for emerging artists, as well as accomplished artists, to exhibit their artwork.  Community organizations from throughout the county promote the needs of children with disabilities, celebrate peace, and stimulate dialogue between cultures.

Photographic displays honor historical perspectives, while a multitude of organizations hosting children’s programming explore opportunities to hike, bike, create, and learn.  The dimensions of Alzheimer’s are revealed through art and poetry; the artistic abilities of adults with special needs demonstrate extraordinary talents.  Collaborations between Door County’s non-profit organizations—variously supported by grants and funding--are testimony to the intimate relationship between the various groups.  Colorful quilts tell a story in patch and pattern, “plein air” artists recreate the county’s beauty on canvas, and the illustrations of renowned artists are a lesson in skill.  Open to the public, the Link Gallery is a treasure.  A walk through the community’s “link” is a delight to the eye and an affirmation of the difference art can make in every life.

The Hardy Gallery
Nowhere in the Midwest are the arts more intertwined with the life of a community than Door County, and nowhere in Door County is the passion to connect the arts to the community greater than at the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, WI.

Founded in 1962 by the Peninsula Arts Association (PAA) in honor of Francis Howe Hard, the Hardy Gallery has initiatives that address the needs of the local artist community and the creative enrichment of local youth, and is more focused than even on educating the public and promoting the visual arts and artists of the Door County Peninsula.

Join us down on Ephraim's historic Anderson Dock for plenty of great events and exhibits in 2010, including our Annual Juried Exhibit, our popular Collection Invitational and Community Mosaic Project Exhibits, and our fall show, entitled "Dimension in Door: Form Transcending Function," which will showcase the work and artistic process of many of Door County's three-dimensional artists.

The Hardy is free and open to the public from May through October.  Please visit the Hardy's website for hours and a current listing of exhibitions and calendar of events.
